Six people, one warehouse, 32 products, and a rule about what goes on a product page.
Duvet & Shades began in 2016 with a bad night. One of us had bought a “medium warmth” duvet for a flat in Stockholm and spent a winter too cold under it, because medium meant something different to the shop than it did to the bedroom. The number that would have prevented that, the tog, was nowhere on the page. Neither was the weight of the fill, the construction of the shell, or the fact that down needs airing.
So the rule we started with is still the rule: a product goes on this site with its tog or its fill weight, its shell, its construction, and the thing about it that you will not like. If we cannot write all five, we do not list it.
The range grew outwards from duvets to the things that sit next to them: pillows, the protectors that keep both clean, toppers, quilts and throws. The shades came later, from the same bad night. A bedroom is for sleeping in, and sleeping needs dark as much as it needs warmth.
Six workshops, all in the EU
Our down duvets, pillows and the feather topper are filled and sewn by a family firm in the Polish lake district that has handled goose down for three generations. The down is a by-product of the food industry, traceable to the farm, and every batch is tested by an independent laboratory for cleanliness and fill power before it is accepted. We do not use any down from live-plucked or force-fed birds, and the farm audits that confirm this are repeated annually.
Wool duvets, pillows, the wool protector and the wool topper are made forty minutes from our warehouse, from fleece scoured without chlorine. Wool is the material we know best and the one we recommend most often to people who cannot decide.
Protectors, quilts, the cotton throw, the recycled-fibre duvet and pillow, and all three sleep masks are sewn in the north of Portugal. The recycled fibre is spun from post-consumer bottles in the same region.
The buckwheat hulls are grown and cleaned in Austria; the wool throws are woven in Lithuania; the recycled-wool throw is spun and woven in Italy, where the sorting of old garments by colour is a trade in its own right; and the lamp shades are rolled and pleated by hand in a workshop outside Stockholm.
Memory foam, because it sleeps hot and cannot be recycled. Synthetic down imitations sold as “hotel quality”, because they are not. Anything whose tog we cannot measure. And nothing on this site is a version of another company's design or carries another company's name.
A specific promise about the two ways a duvet actually fails, rather than a lifetime one we would have to hedge.
If a baffle wall or a quilting seam opens within 5 years of delivery, we repair it or replace the duvet, pillow or topper.
If the fill moves so that one chamber is noticeably empty and another overfull, and shaking does not redistribute it, the same applies. Natural settling of a wool topper is described on its page and is not migration.
We pay it both ways inside the EU. For the UK, Switzerland and Norway we refund your outbound postage against a receipt.
Damage from a domestic machine on an item marked professional laundering only, tears, burns, stains, pet damage, or a shell worn through after years of use without a cover or protector.
Email a photograph and your order reference. You will have a reply within one working day and usually a returns label with it.
Because a duvet cannot be judged in a shop, and a pillow cannot be judged in one night.
Sleep under the duvet or on the pillow for up to 30 nights from delivery. With a cover or a protector on, please, but use it properly.
Wrong warmth, wrong height, too heavy, too loud. Email us within the 30 nights and we send a label. Return postage is €9,90, deducted from the refund; the rest comes back within 14 days.
A returned duvet or pillow is laundered professionally and given to a shelter in Stockholm. It is never resold, which is why the trial costs us something and why we keep it to the things you sleep on.
Protectors, toppers, quilts, throws, masks and shades carry the ordinary 30-day return for unused items in their packaging.
Tell us how warm the bedroom is at night, whether you sleep hot or cold, and whether you share the bed. We answer with a tog and a fill, and if the honest answer is the cheapest duvet on the site, that is the one we will name.
